Writing poetry every April for National Poetry Month became a tradition after my father passed away, but when I discovered Dominican Writers, it became a safe and sacred space. It was a space for me to expand and explore my writing. I started to write in Spanish/Spanglish, which was new. I began to tap into Dominican themes and stories which also was new for me. As someone who didn’t get sent to DR every summer like my friends and other family members, as the years went by, DR became further and further away for me. It was a place I was called a Gringa. A place where when I went, I didn’t always feel worthy or enough. I was “Americanized.”
Dominican Writers every Sunday has writing workshops and from the beginning, embraced me and created a space that is all-inclusive for every type of Dominican and even non-Dominican writer. Dominican Writers is where I performed my first open mic, found my editor for my book (shoutout to Roxana Calderon), and continue to champion not only my writing ,but the films I am in like B is for Bachata.
